Don't know where to spend your Halloween night and love to get a thrill? Why not adventuring into an abandoned place fueled by tales of dark presences and tragic, mysterious events? Places where few dare to go, where you need to arm yourself with courage, and maybe a camera to capture some creepy images...
There are many places that owe their fame mostly to stories concerning the paranormal, unexplainable events or to fatal events. Whether you believe them or not, these places surely have a creepy shroud of mystery.

ISLAND OF DOLLS. XOCHIMICO, MEXICO.

The Island of Dolls is one of the most haunted sites in Mexico. Don Julian Santana was a man who lived as a hermit on this island for over fifty years. The tragic accident of a girl who drowned on the island while visiting, caused further madness in Julian. Some people believe that he started fishing dolls out of the river because he believed that the dolls were real children. Whatever it was that motivated him, the island was turned into a shrine for that little girl. Dolls by the hundreds hang in the trees and the house. Don Julian Santana was found in the same part of the river that the little girl drowned in by his nephew. He said that he heard voices beckoning to him from the river. Each of the dolls is believed to be fused with the energy of the little girl. Candles, hard candy, and dolls should be brought as offerings to appease the spirits. The dolls are said to move, beckon, and speak to those who come. The spirit of the man is also believed to be there still. Orbs, loud sounds, and opening doll eyes abound.

MANILA FILM CENTER. PASAY CITY, PHILIPPINES.

The Manila Film Center was the site of a construction accident in the early '80s. When construction of the center was rushed for a film festival, the ceiling scaffolding collapsed, killing several workmen who fell to the orchestra below. Rather than halt construction to rescue survivors and retrieve the bodies of dead workmen, Imelda Marcos, the First Lady and the main financier of the project, was believed to have ordered cement to be poured into the orchestra, entombing the fallen workmen. Some of them were even buried alive in the orchestra. Various ghostly activities were reported on the site including mysterious sounds, voices and poltergeist activity. In the late '90s, a group called the Spirit Questors began to make visits to the film center in an attempt to contact and appease the souls of the workmen who were killed in the building. Some of these spirits claimed to have moved on, but a few allegedly remain. Previously abandoned for its haunted reputation, the building is now currently in use.

BIRD CAGE THEATRE. TOMBSTONE, ARIZONA.

At the Bird Cage Theatre in Tombstone, there have been reports of ghostly laughter, yelling, and strange music. These reports date back to the 1880s. It was investigated on the TV series Ghost Adventures. It was also investigated by TAPS on Ghost Hunters.

The Alkimos was a Greek-owned merchant ship which was wrecked on the coast north of Perth, Western Australia in 1963. A nearby locality was later named after the vessel. BHANGARH. RAJASTHAN, INDIA.

Bhangarh is a ruined town in India that is famous for its historical ruins. It is in the Rajgarh municipality of the Alwar district in the state of Rajasthan. Bhangarh is at the edge of the Sariska Tiger Reserve. I’s also a popular tourist attraction. According to legend, the city of Bhangarh was cursed by the Guru Balu Nath. Legends says that there are ghosts in Bhang

arh and that is why entry is prohibited for tourists in the fort after sunset and before sunrise. The locals believe that the princess Ratnavati has taken birth somewhere else and that the fort and the empire of Bhangarh is waiting for her return to put an end to the curse…

Bhangarth is one of most haunted places in the world.

DUCKETTS GROVE. CARLOW, IRELAND.

The mansion was owned by the Duckett family for 300 years. It is said to be haunted by a Banshee Ghost. On March 17, 2011, the SyFy show Destination Truth featured a four hour live investigation for the episode to find out the mystery of the ruins.

LINDA VISTA HOSPITAL, LOS ANGELES.

Linda Vista Hospital in Los Angeles has actually enjoyed a full life after closing its doors as a medical facility in 1990. It has been used as a filming location for television shows, music videos, and movies. While it doesn’t have a permanent function at the moment, it is patrolled by security officers and film crews can frequently be seen roaming the halls.

Many who have been there claim that the former hospital is haunted; they swear they can hear voices and have seen the specters of deceased patients wandering the halls.

WAVERLY HILLS SANATORIUM. Louisville, Kentucky.

The original Waverly Hills Sanatorium, a two-story wooden structure, was opened in 1910, but the larger brick and concrete structure as it stand today was completed in 1926. The hospital was always dedicated to the treatment of tuberculosis patients, a disease that was fairly common in the early 20th Century. It is estimated that as many as 63,000 people died as the sanatorium. Those deaths coupled with the reports of severe mistreatment of patients and highly questionable experiments and procedures are ingredients for a haunted location. Ghost investigators who have ventured into Waverly have reported a host of strange paranormal phenomena, including voices of unknown origin, isolated cold spots and unexplained shadows. Screams have been heard echoing in its now abandoned hallways, and fleeting apparitions have been encountered.

BORLEY RECTORY. Borley, England.

These derelict building is not a place to enter lightly. Though the small village of Borley, near Sudbury, UK, is not the sort of place one would associate with ghosts, it has a dreadful reputation because it was the site of the infamous Borley Rectory, reputedly the ‘Most Haunted House in England’ and It was the scene of one of the cases of poltergaist infestation most famous and documented in the world. Built in 1863 for the Reverend Henry Bull, it sits on the site of an ancient monastery. The ghost of a mournful nun who patrolled the so-called 'Nun's Walk' had often been seen there. An old story claimed that she had fallen in love with a monk from the Borley Monastery – to much outrage – and the two had tried to elope together but had been quickly tracked down. The monk was executed and the nun bricked up in the cellars of the monastic buildings!

Ghost towns from Italy: Craco

Placed on the summit of a hill overlooking the Cavone valley, in the region of Basilicata, Craco looks like a small-scale copy of the nearby Matera.
The ancient settlement, which reached a population of 2000, formed on the highest peak of this almost 7 million years old clayey valley. The settlement known as “Graculum”, which in Latin means “small ploughed field”, is documented for the first time in 1060 a.D., but the structure of the village actually dates to a period between 1154 and 1168. Thanks to its position, Craco became a strategically important military centre during the reign of Federico II.
During the XV century the city expanded around the four main palaces: the Maronna Palace with its monumental entrance, the Grossi Palace, with its beautiful vault and floreal pattern, the Carbone Palace, with its XV century monumental entrance, and the Simonetti Palace, with its peculiar medallions.

In 1799 Craco joined Innocenzo De Cesare’s republican ideals, a movement of the rural middle class which sought to break the ties with the feudal lords, and then fell into silence, until a last, tragic event in 1963…
A large landslide destroyed part of the town, forcing the villagers to progressively leave their homes. The 1972 flood gave another hard blow, and the town slid some more along with the containment walls that were supposed to hold it up. Not everyone was willing to leave the town behind, and some remained there until the day they died.
Today, Craco isn’t sliding anymore and is constantly monitored. Its almost supernatural charms recalls its past glory, its ephemeral beauty seems almost an illusion…
Nature is slowly overtaking the town, a town still hiding mysteries and stories about ghosts claiming back their homes in the darkest nights. Some claim they heard harrowing screams and footsteps sounds, or saw dim lights behind the desolating void of an empty window.
Craco’s word-wide fame led it to a fate that it probably would never have imagined, that of a much sought cinema set. Many films were shot here, like Christ stopped at Eboli, King David, Terra Bruciata, Quantum of Solace, and even The Passion, where it was used as the background of Judas’s hanging.
At times Craco is visited by some tourists, attracted by its charm and by the mystery of abandon… unfortunately, though, the place’s politics are aimed towards its economic exploitation and not towards its artistic and cultural promotion, so tourists are charged to enter the village, and are imposed a fine if they don’t pay. This policy of pure economic exploitation stopped us from creating a Ghost Town episode about this beautiful, solitary and silent village…

Ghost towns from Italy: Galeria Antica

Galeria Antica stands in the countryside north of Rome, just 8 km away from the Braccianese Way. A ghost town buried by vegetation like the ancient Maya ruins, an incredible maze of castle vestiges, Etruscan houses, tombs and places of worship.
Its origins get lost in the mist of time…probably founded under Etruscan domination with the name of Careia, it was a town of little importance guarding the southern borders of Etruscan territory. Later it was colonised by the Romans, as attested by some pointed arches and by some constructions built with the “opus incertum” technique. Galeria then fell during the Germanic invasions, and was populated again only during the Middle Ages. After being seized and destroyed by the Saracens, it was rebuilt and extended, and from 1276 it belonged to the Orsini family. After passing through many owners, it ended in the hands of the Sanseverino family, with whom the town suffered a slow decline until a terrible malaria epidemic decimated its population. In 1809, Galeria Antica was left abandoned.

Malaria was not rare at the time, as the place was subject to the frequent floods from the Arrone creek. What remains a mystery is the reason behind an abandonment so sudden that the people left behind not only tools and furnishings, but even the bodies of their dead, who were buried only half a century later…
After it was left deserted, Galeria became shelter for the shepherds and booty for the bandits, and today its only inhabitants are lizards, birds and vipers living in a twine of brambles and climbing plants. Amongst its ruins are still visible the St. Andrew’s Church’s bell tower, a still intact fortified bastion, the ancient main gate to the dead city, the guard tower still showing faded traces of its clock, and the vestiges of the castle, with its extraordinary system of gates and walls. In its square are still found the ghostly remains of the oven of the governor’s house and of a church. At the town’s secondary gate, the beautiful Roman access arch made of red bricks is still standing. But it is underneath that the ghost town hides its secret, a crypt with its labyrinth of tunnels that still are, and maybe will forever be, unexplored…
An old legend tells of a ghost minstrel named “Senz’affanni” (which means roughly “No worries”), who died around 300 years ago and who returns every year in Galeria, singing and playing for his beloved woman while riding a white horse. Many affirm they heard hoofs and moans, especially in winter. Those who do not believe in the story of the ghost say these sounds are made by the rushing Arrone creek.
Galeria Antica was declared a Natural Monument in 1999, but unfortunately it still remains prey to vandalisms and to unknown sects that use it at night for their ceremonies, attracted by the mysterious aura of a place oozing with death…

Un passato che scompare, un presente che dimentica e un futuro che cancella

Immaginiamo una casa, la nostra casa. Il luogo in cui ci rifugiamo, ci riposiamo, dove ogni giorno ci ritroviamo. Magari giriamo per il mondo ma la casa rimane sempre il nostro punto fisso, la nostra meta principale. Ora immaginiamo di perderla, di doverla lasciare per sempre... Immaginiamo un paese di case o una città, immaginiamo ogni luogo che ogni giorno frequentiamo. Immaginiamo un ricordo della nostra infanzia. E ora immaginiamo un cimitero di case, ricordi frantumati e rovine di vite interrotte...
E' stato il triste destino di molte città e sarà l'inesorabile destino di altrettante. Sono numerose le città fantasma in Italia e nel mondo, di più di quante si possa immaginare. Alcune resistono per ora al tempo e alla distruzione, altre sono scomparse per sempre insieme alla loro storia, cancellate dai ricordi e dalle mappe geografiche.
Possono essere molte le cause di un abbandono, il più delle volte traumatico e doloroso. Terremoti, innondazioni, incendi, frane, disastri naturali di fronte ai quali si rimane inermi. Ma il più delle volte la causa è l'uomo stesso. Molti paesi sono stati abbandonati perché sono stati lasciati soli, dimenticati prima ancora di essere morti. Magari sfruttati finché producevano ricchezza e poi emarginati ai limiti della loro esistenza. E poi si svuotano lentamente e lentamente diventano scheletri del passato. Perché l'uomo ha bisogno di una casa per sentirsi al sicuro ma anche la casa ha bisogno dell'uomo per restare in piedi...

Il futuro di Timbuktu

Una città come Detroit negli ultimi 30 anni ha perso oltre 700.000 abitanti. Mezzo secolo fa contava quasi 2 milioni di abitanti, oggi ne ha appena 900.000 ed è in vertiginoso calo.

But Banjul, capitale del Gambia, rischia di affondare completamente in mare a causa dell'erosione e dell'innalzamento del livello del mare. Anche Città Del Messico sta affondando ma non a causa del mare, bensì di una falda acquifera che è la principale fonte di acqua potabile. Ogni volta che un abitante beve un bicchiere d'acqua la città affonda un pochino. Negli ultimi 100 anni è scesa di ben 9 metri. Napoli potrebbe essere potenzialmente distrutta dall'eruzione del Vesuvio, così come San Francisco dal temuto Big One.

Il passato non si può cambiare ma è nel presente che possiamo fare qualcosa per impedire che intere città scompaiano o vengano dimenticate.

In Italia un recente rapporto realizzato da Legambiente e Serico-Gruppo Cresme ha previsto che nel 2016 saranno 4.395 i comuni che, in assenza di interventi, subiranno un progressivo disagio abitativo: il 42,2 % dei comuni italiani, il 10,4 % della popolazione. Di questi ben 1.650 sono destinati a diventare delle vere e proprie città fantasma, ovvero un quinto dei comuni italiani, il 4,2 % della popolazione. Alle già numerose ghost town se ne andranno quindi ad aggiungere altre, in un vorticoso moto di inesorabile abbandono.

Per molti la città fantasma è un luogo dal fascino misterioso, angoli remoti in cui si può sperimentare l'assenza dell'uomo dove un tempo invece era assidua presenza. Apocalittiche vedute di un passato distrutto, dove una macchina fotografica o una videocamera possono immortalare un vissuto decadente ma che seduce e attrae. Ma non per tutti è così... Per chi ci ha abitato non è un paese fantasma, è la sua casa che scompare nell'oblio. Nel nostro viaggio attraverso questi paesi abbiamo soprattutto incontrato queste persone che amaramente ci hanno detto: "Ci hanno dimenticati...". E' questa la verità. Abbiamo dimenticato che in Italia ci sono ancora luoghi autentici e meravigliosi, dove convivono culture e tradizioni di un tempo, dove la gente vive con semplicità e passione per le proprie radici. Abbiamo visto questi paesi spopolati, abitati solo da anziani perchè ormai i giovani se ne sono andati. Quegli stessi anziani che già hanno dovuto abbandonare la loro casa e che ora vedono il proprio paese scomparire. Le città fantasma possono essere ancora valorizzate raccontandone la storia, basta non rimanere nell'indifferenza. Sono esistite e tentano ancora di sopravvivere ma se non si fa qualcosa moriranno insieme alle ultime persone che ci hanno abitato. Bisogna far sì che vengano ricordate e soprattutto far sì che non crollino per sempre. E se per molti paesi è già troppo tardi per altri si può fare ancora qualcosa per contrastarne l'abbandono e per impedire che un pezzo di questa Italia venga dimenticato. Un luogo senza memoria non ha futuro, ma il futuro è quello che noi ci creiamo nel presente...

I misteri di Ghost Town

Strana presenza catturata casualmente durante le riprese della puntata su Poggioreale.

Quando siamo partiti per intrapprendere questo viaggio nelle città fantasma italiane non volevamo raccontarle attraverso le storie di fantasmi o dei misteri che di solito avvolgono questi luoghi dimenticati. Volevamo raccontare la loro storia soprattutto attraverso coloro che nel paese hanno vissuto... Ma la storia e le tradizioni di ogni luogo, specialmente se ha radici antiche nel passato, sono fatte anche di credenze, leggende e superstizioni.
Ogni paese nasconde segreti, curiosità, presagi, racconti veri o leggendari, ma mai più credevamo di imbatterci anche noi in un mistero... Come già abbiamo scritto in un precedente post, la scoperta è stata del tutto casuale. Rivedendo il materiale girato infatti abbiamo notato qualcosa di strano, una presenza che di fatto non sappiamo spiegare. Di questo materiale abbiamo estratto un filmato:

Nella foto sopra e in quella seguente si possono vedere invece due fotogrammi in cui abbiamo cercato di far risaltare la sagoma.

Il risultato è alquanto curioso...
Non vogliamo entrare nei particolari perchè non sappiamo dare delle risposte, ognuno è libero di interpretare e dare una sua personale spiegazione su questo fenomeno.
Tra le città fantasma che abbiamo visitato, tuttavia, due in particolare narrano leggende, storie di fantasmi e di antiche maledizioni.
Balestrino (http://ghostowndoc.blogspot.com/2010/03/il-fascino-di-balestrino.html) è tra le venti ghost town più famose, inquietanti e stregate del mondo. Le credenze popolari che sono state tramandate nei secoli hanno suggestionato per lungo tempo la storia di questo borgo e ancora oggi alimentano i racconti dei suoi vecchi abitanti e le paure dei giovani. Si narra dello spirito di un marchese e di un corvo che quando vola sul vecchio campanile presagisce qualcosa di oscuro... La notte si sentono porte cigolare e molti abitanti sostengono di sentire voci e lamenti. Avventurarsi al buio a Balestrino è senz'altro un'esperienza per i più coraggiosi.

Pentedattilo invece, anche grazie alla sua posizione che lo vede arroccato in cima ad una roccia a forma di cinque dita, ha acquisito nel tempo l'inquetante appellativo di Mano del Diavolo, proprio a causa di un antico massacro e delle storie che in seguito l'hanno alimentato. Qui, nel 1686, ci fu infatti un tragico evento conosciuto come "La strage degli Alberti" in cui un'intera famiglia, quella degli Alberti, venne massacrata dall'ira passionale del barone Bernardino che desiderava a tutti i costi sposare Antonietta, la figlia del marchese. Questa tragica storia ha dato origine a varie leggende e a un'oscura maledizione che da sempre è pesata sugli abitanti del borgo: un giorno l'enorme mano si abbatterà sugli uomini per punirli della loro sete di sangue. Pare che la notte, in inverno, si possano ancora sentire le urla strazianti del marchese Alberti e i pianti della povera Antonietta...
